Beginner Band Concert next Tuesday, December 5, at 6:30 PM
  • Students should arrive by 5:30 and meet in the band hall
  • This performance is a required class project and is a Project Grade for the course
  • Students should dress up for the event.
    • Boys - Dress shirt, dress pants, dress shoes.  School uniform is acceptable.  Tie and jacket is optional.
    • Girls - Skirts MUST be knee length or longer.  Dress or blouse and skirt or dress pants and blouse. School uniform is acceptable.

Giving Thanks!

Giving thanks!

Thank you Mr. Pogue and students.  I'm very grateful for Mr. Pogue's hard work and expertise as a music educator here at Walker. He has been handling all the instruction and directed the performances for the Walker preview Thursday. Thank you to the students that went the extra mile and performed in the morning and the evening performances.

Students, remember to take your instruments home and practice for the December concert!

This week in Band - 3 performances for Symphonic

Symphonic Band performances at Walker showcase!


The Symphonic Band will perform for the Walker showcase Thursday during school and will be featured at the Walker Showcase Thursday night at 6:30 PM.  Students will stay after school Thursday so bring $5 for pizza or snacks.

Band Boosters  - we need your help picking up and serving pizza or other snacks for the students.  Please contact Mr. Flemons or Mr. Pogue if you can help

The fall festival was a great success and our parents helped make it great.  Thank you to those who helped out!

All-City and All Region competition this week.

Walker Band to Host and Compete in the DISD All-City Band competition

Tomorrow- Monday, Nov. 6,  all the Middle School band programs in the District will come to Walker as we host the auditions for All-City Honor band again this year.  Here are the details:
  • Auditions begin at 6:00 PM and continue until all students are done.
  • Students are dismissed when their audition is complete
  • Results are posted after tabulations are confirmed
  • Parents will set up and run a concession stand at 4:00 PM - Volunteers needed
  • Bands will begin arriving between 4:00 and 5:00 PM
  • Judges will have a directors meeting in the Library at 5:30 PM
  • Help is needed setting up rooms right after school is out.  We use most of the rooms on the first floor for audition rooms
Walker Students will compete in All-Region Auditions at Kennemer Middle School in Duncanville Friday evening and Saturday morning.  Schedule will be posted later this week.

Practice Priorities and a Parade

Practice outside of class is where students make the greatest amount of progress.  There are many opportunities for students to practice outside of class including:
  • before school each day from 7:55 - 8:25
  • after school  each day from 3:45 - 4:45, except Friday
  • Taking instruments home to practice
Parade
  • The Symphonic Band and select members of the Concert band will perform in the WT White High School Homecoming Parade this Thursday.  Students will ride the bus from Walker to WT White.  Parents will need to pick students up at the High School.  4505 Ridgeside Dr.

Week of 9/10/17 - 9/16/17

Kicking off the year!

Thursday night was a great kick off event.  The Symphonic Band performed and we had hundreds of parents and students there to learn about our program and getting an instrument.  We have over 400 students in the band this year!  Students progress through 3 levels of band.
  • Beginning Band
  • Concert Band
  • Symphonic Band

 Sectionals

We live in one of the top band communities in one of the top states in the US.  In order for our students to be successful and remain competitive in our region we have required section rehearsals once per week after school.
  • The rehearsals are from 3:45 to  4:45 on the designated day.  
  • Transportation is NOT provided.  Students must exit the building at 4:45
  • Students that are in other activities (sports, art, etc) are excused from those activities.  We work with the coaches of the other activities to make a workable schedule.
  • Attendance is required for members of the Symphonic and Concert Bands
Monday - Flutes
Tuesday - Clarinets and Saxophones
Wednesday - Trumpets, French Horns and Percussion
Thursday - Low Brass - T-bones, Baritones, Tubas

Before and After School practice

The band hall is open mornings starting at 7:30 and afternoons until 4:45 for students to complete their outside practice hours.  Transportation is NOT provided.  Students must exit the building at 4:45
Mornings - Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday - not on Wednesday.
Afternoons - Monday thru Thursday - not on Friday

Band this week!


Calling all band students and band parents!  Come to Walker and see us this week. The Band Hall is open each day this week from 9 AM to 1 PM this week for instrument check out and getting ready for the new year.  We're going to be cleaning instruments and organizing music plus decorating the band hall for the fall semester.  Come by and say hello to Mr Flemons and Mr. Pogue. Band Camp wrap up!

Band Camp wrap up!

Band camp wrapped up with a great performance in the Meyerson Center this past Saturday. We had over 30 students from Walker that performed. Students spent the week studying with professional musicians from The Dallas Winds and rehearsing with some of the best conductors from universities and schools around the state.

Performance and End of Year Celebration!

 End of year Awards Concert - 05/25/17 - All Bands - Dress up event
"A night to Remember"  Awards, Performances and Fun for all.  Special Guests - WT White Band
  • Thursday Night  May 25
  • Performance Begins at 6:30PM
  • Students must be in place for rehearsal by 5:45 PM.  This is a dress up event.

Pizza and a Movie.  Band students are invited to stay after school Thursday for and end of the year celebration before the concert.

  • 3:45  Meet in Auditorium
  • 4:00 - 5:30 Pizza and a Movie.  Cost is $5
    •  The Band Booster Parents will be serving Pizza, Nachos, soft drinks and treats to band students only from 4:00 - 5:00 in the cafeteria.  Cost for food is $5.
  • A movie will be shown in the Auditorium.  
  • No food in the auditorium at any time
  • Students must stay in the cafeteria and auditorium

End of Year Details

  • No after school band this week.
  • End of year Concert Thursday evening.  See details below
  • All Instruments must be turned in Friday.  School lets out early that day.  The band hall will be open from 1-4 for instrument check in

All bands will be performing at our End of Year Concert.

  • Concert begins at 6:30 PM
  • Students should be in place ready to play by 5:45
  • It is a dress up event.  Same dress code as the award ceremonies this past week.

Camp Forms Due this week

  • Band Camp runs from June  5 - 10
  • Bus will pick us up each morning at 7:45 at Walker

  • Cost is $25 and also covers student instrument rental

The Symphonic Band performed at the Eismann Center Tuesday as part of the Peak Music Festival.
They gave a beautiful performance and were awarded the 1st Division trophy by all the judges at the contest.  Congratulations Band!

Congratulations students for great performances at Sandy Lake this weekend!  The judges were very complimentary and the scores reflected the great work that the students put in.
Our judges were:

  • Joe Gunn, Director of Trinity HS and Harwood Jr. High Bands
  • Ray Lichtenwalter, Director of Fine Arts, Arlington ISD
  • Dr. Ken Van Winkle, President- New Mexico State University, former Director of Bands, and Mr. Flemons' college trumpet professor 31 years ago
Beginning Band performed first and received a 1st Division rating and trophy
Concert Band performed "Ghost Ship" and received a 2nd Division rating and trophy
Symphonic Band performed "Heroes Triumphant" and received a 1st Division rating and trophy as well as winning the trophy for the "Outstanding Band" of the contest.

We have the hardest working group of parents in Dallas!  Thank you so much to the Band Parents who cooked, chaperoned, rode the bus... and served these students so generously.  I am very grateful for your help.  The day could not have happened without you.

*Concert Black Dress Clothes - Black or gray clothing from head to toe.  Girls - black blouse and pants, blouse and skirt or dress with black tights/hose, black shoes.  Boys - black long sleeve shirt. black pants, black socks, black shoes.  Boys may wear a coat and tie as well but it is not required.

Contest Week #1 Pre-UIL

Great job at the WTW Street Fair Band!  You represented E.D. Walker very well.  Proud of you!


Pre- UIL is this week for both Concert  (Wednesday) and Symphonic (Friday) Bands.  Click on the "Performances and Contests" tab to see the schedules.

Section rehearsals are critical this week.  Every band student needs to attend. Sectionals are from 3:45 - 4:45 each afternoon.  Full band rehearsal is every morning from 8:00 - 8:30

Monday - Flutes and Clarinets
Tuesday - Trumpets
Wednesday - Saxophones, French Horns, Percussion
Thursday - Low Brass

WT White HS Street Fair  - Concert and Symphonic Band - Saturday April 1 - Band shirt, school pants.  Students must provide transportation - There is no bus for this event.  We will meet at WT White at 10:30 AM
  • 9:30 - Walker Band Room open to pick up your
  • 10:00 - Band room closed - go to WT White
  • 10:30 - Meet at WT White Band Hall for Warm up
  • 11:20 - Perform on stage
  • 12:00 - dismissed to enjoy the Street Fair.  Parents pick up students at WT White

This Week in Band

This week in Band!

  • STAAR testing will be taking place Tuesday and Wednesday but we will still have Section Rehearsals in the afternoons and morning rehearsals 3 days this week.
  • Concert and Symphonic Band will perform at the WT White Street Fair this Saturday.  We will meet at WT White at 10:45 AM, Saturday April 1.  Dress is Band T-shirt and jeans. 

Monday - 8:00 AM - Morning practice for all students
                 3:35 PM - Flute & Clarinet section practice
Tuesday - 8:00 AM - NO PRACTICE
                 3:35 PM - Trumpet Section
Wednesday 8:00AM - NO PRACTICE
                 3:35 PM - Saxophone, F Horn, Percussion

Concert 3/21/17 - Concert and Symphonic Bands - Wear Concert Black Dress Clothes
  • @ WT White High School  - 4505 Ridgeside Dr.,  Dallas, Texas 75244
    • From Walker go North to the light at Harvest Hill, turn left and head West past the Tollway two blocks.  At the corner of Welch, turn left and head South two blocks.  Park in the teachers parking lot.  
  • Students must arrive by 5:30 PM for warm up meeting in the cafeteria
  • Concert begins at 6:30
  • Project grade worth 20% of your grade for the 6 weeks
