Congratulations Students and Thank you Parents!

What an outstanding evening of music.  I am so proud of our Beginner students and Intermediate Students and Advanced Students!  You did an outstanding job at this evening's performance.

Parents, thank you for coming out in cold weather and traffic this evening.  We had a great crowd and I appreciate your effort to be there for your students.

Thanks especially to our Band Boosters Janell and Michael Branch, Violeta Rios, Jennifer Burdick, Rommie Omar, Chris Tuveng and so many others that have come out to organize and support our band's events this year.  You are the BEST!

I am so grateful to be a part of this organization.

No school Monday Dec. 9 but our concert is still on for Tuesday evening December 10. Concert begins at 6:00 PM. Students should arrive by 5:30 to prepare for the concert.

December 10 Concert!

Concert December 10!


You are invited to attend and see the progress your students have made this semester.


There will be refreshments served courtesy of the band boosters.


This performance is mandatory for all band students beginning and advanced band students.  The performance counts as a project grade.  The concert is listed on the calendar we passed out at the beginning of the school year as a required performance.

When
Students should arrive at 5:30 PM to prepare.  The band booster presentation will begin at 6:00 PM and the students will begin performing at 6:15 PM

What to wear

Beginning students will wear their band t-shirt and khaki school pants
Advanced students will wear dress black clothes (any combination of black and or gray dress clothes).  Boys should wear black dress shirt, slacks and dress shoes.  Ties and jackets are optional.  Girls should wear a black dress or dress pants outfit.  Skirts MUST be knee length or longer!

Performance cancelled!

Performance Cancelled!

The band will not be performing tonight at Open House.  My wife has been admitted to the hospital for emergency surgery and I will not be at school today or tonight.  All students should catch the bus home and not stay after school.

Special Performance for Open House!  

The Walker Beginning and Advanced Bands have been asked to perform Thursday evening at the Open House.  We will be providing a short performance for students and parents of our feeder elementary schools.

This is not a required performance and only a select group of students were invited to perform. If your student was invited they were given an information sheet inviting them to perform.

Students will report to the Band Room at 6:00 PM to set up.  The performance begins at 6:30 and will conclude at 7:15.  

Students should wear their band T-Shirt and Khaki school pants.  Pick your students up at 7:30 at the conclusion of the performance.

Fall Festival Time!


Tomorrow - Friday Nov 8 starting at 5 PM, is the E.D. Walker annual Fall Festival!


  • The Band Boosters are sponsoring a Concession Stand and a Cake Walk.


  • Volunteers are needed to work at both areas.


  • Cakes, cookies, cupcakes, brownies and pies are needed to give away as prized in the Cake Walk!


  • Please consider donating a cake and volunteering at one of our booths!

Parent Volunteers needed! All City Band Auditions and Fall Festival

Band Booster Parent Volunteers needed!


The Walker Band is hosting the All-City Band Auditions Monday evening Nov 4. 
 Parents are needed to help...

  • with set up at 4:00 PM
  • Serve/Sell concessions from 4:30 - 6:00
  • Move chairs and stands back to the bandroom when the auditions are over
Band Boosters! this would be a great opportunity to sell hot dogs, nachos, sodas, chips to the visiting students and their families.  Please consider a concession booth in the cafeteria that evening.  

Fall Festival Friday Nov 8 from 5:30 to 8:30
We need parents to help...
  • sell concessions
  • run a cake walk
  • send cakes, cookies, cupcakes, etc for the cake walk

Looking Ahead!

Looking Ahead!


Advanced and Beginning Band students have several events coming up in the next few weeks.  Please take note of the following performances and events.  Make plans to attend our annual December concert on Tuesday December 10.


October 21 - Monday -  Advanced band students perform at the Walker football game.  Click on "Band Calendar" for details or see Saturday's blog post.  Students should bring $5 for a pizza supper or bring their own sack lunch.

November 4 - Walker band hosts the DISD All-City Band auditions.  Selected Advanced Band students will be auditioning for the All-City bands.  Parent volunteers needed for host duties

November 15 and 16 - All-Region Band Auditions held at Kennemer Middle School in Duncanville.  Select students will be chosen to participate.

December 10 - 1st Semester Concert at Walker.  All students beginning and advanced will perform in our annual December concert.

Congratulations! Advanced Band and Beginners are moving ahead

Beginning Band Students are moving ahead!


Beginning Band students had a great week.  Students will be working on lessons 4-7 this coming week.  Very proud of you boys and girls!  Keep up the good work

Advanced Band gives OUTSTANDING performance!


The Advanced Band gave an outstanding performance Thursday at the WT White homecoming Parade!  The band sounded and marched better than it ever has in the parade.  I'm so very proud of our band students.  We have the hardest working students in Dallas.  Their perseverance was outstanding.  The parade is a physical challenge.  Marching that distance while playing is physically and mentally demanding and our kids did a super-fantastic job!  After the parade some of our students even walked back to Walker to put away instruments and then walked home.  Wow! that is a great display of dedication!

Advanced Band to play at Walker Football game Monday night Oct. 21! - Bring $5 for pizza on Monday or bring a sack supper.  This is our last football game of the season.

Advanced Band Parade this week! - Beginners Practice lessons Online

Advanced Band to March in WT White Homecoming Parade!

The Advanced Band 7th and 8th grade students will march in the WT White HS Homecoming Parade this Thursday October 17th..

Students should be wearing their band t-shirt, khaki shorts or pants and athletic footwear

1:30 - A bus will take students from Walker to WT White.
2:00 - Rehearsal at the WTW Band Hall
4:00 - Line up for Parade
4:30 - Parade Steps off
5:00 - Return to WTW Band Hall - students picked up by parents at WTW

Parents will pick students up at WT White in the EAST parking lot by the band hall and portable buildings

Beginners are advancing through Mr. Bandman online lessons!

Beginner students should be practicing lessons 1 - 5 for homework each night.  Students can log on to www.mrbandmanlessons.com to practice at home with Mr. Bandman (Mr. Osborne)!

    Welcome Back to School!

    Welcome Back to School and to Band!


    We had a great first week of Band class with many returning students and record number beginning students this year!



    • Band Student Handbooks were distributed and registration forms should be turned in by now.
    • Advanced students have been checking out instruments already and playing in class.
    • Beginning students have been exploring and trying out instruments and are beginning to decide what instrument they will play this year
    • All Students may begin turning in their instrument check out forms and band fees for the year
    • Checks, cash or money orders are acceptable
    • Checks should be made out to E.D. Walker Middle School
    • Fees for every band student for the year are a $25 instrument fee and a $25 Supply fee for a total of $50
    • Fees can be paid all at once or can be broken into two payments
    • We have record numbers of students in the band this year but there are many students that requested band and were not placed in a band class.
    • For schedule changes to add band please contact the Assistant Principal, Chalet Hill or the school counselors, Cindy Dominguez or Shawnee Smith

    Concert at the Meyerson

    Final Concert!

    The final concert for the end of the Dallas Wind Symphony Summer band camp will be held tomorrow.  

     Saturday at 11AM the students will perform in the Meyerson Symphony Center.  

    The camp busses will run on their regular schedule.  Students should plan to ride the bus tomorrow. 

    Parents who want to pick up their student at the concert should check in with Mr. Osborne before leaving the concert.

    Band Camp and Summer Vacation!

    Band Camp and Summer Vacation


    Band Camp with the Dallas Wind Symphony:

    • The bus will pick you up here at Walker each day at 7:45 AM and drop you off here at Walker in the evening.  This is a change from what is printed on the enrollment form.
    • The camp runs Monday - Saturday, June 17-22.  Saturday is the big performance in the Meyerson Symphony Center, home of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Dallas Wind Symphony.
    • Make sure you check out an instrument this week to use for the camp and summer.
    • Practice your audition music!!!  It was handed out in class.  If you don't have it you can get it at http://www.dws.org/bandcamp   Scroll down to the bottom and click on the attachment for your instrument.  Be ready to play at least the first two pieces on the first day of camp.
    • If you have questions or need help this week come by the band room.  We will be here and can help.

    Summer Vacation

    • Watch the website and Charms for notices about summer activities.  
    • We will have a few Summer practices to get ready for the fall.
    • Drum Corp International will have a few shows in the area.  Watch for announcements

    End of Year Activities

    • May 16 -  End of the Year Concert and PTA meeting
      • Students should wear their band shirt and khaki pants
      • Students may stay after school for practice.  Bring a sack lunch or order pizza for $5
      • 6:00 PM PTA meeting followed by the Concert
      • Cake and cookie reception following the concert - each family please donate 1 cake or 1 dozen cookies
    • May 17 - Instrument Turn-In and check out for next year - 2013-14
      • All school instruments must be turned in for inventory
      • Instruments may be checked out for the summer and next school beginning May 27
    • May 31End of the Year Party
      • Pre-purchase a meal ticket for $5 before May 27
    • Last week of school - Award Ceremonies - details to follow
    • June 17-22 - Summer Band Camp with the Dallas Wind Symphony
      • We encourage every student to attend.  Cost is only $25 and the Band Booster is offering $15 scholarships to the first 25 6th and 7th grade students that apply so your cost is only $10
      • Students will need to check out an instrument for the summer/next year. Cost $25.  
      • Students will perform their concert on the stage of the Meyerson Symphony Center on May 21.

    Also, there are no more morning or afternoon practices after the last concert for the rest of the year.

    Congratulations to the concert and Symphonic bands!


    Both the Concert and Symphonic Bands earned 1st division trophies in their classifications. 

    Awards have concluded and we are loading the buses to return to Walker.  We should arrive at 6:15.

    Advanced Bands compete at Sandy Lake

    Today the Concert and Symphonic Bands will travel to the Sandy Lake Music Festival to perform.  Our performance times have changed.  Also, because our buses must also run afternoon bus routes our schedule will be as follows:

    3:30 - Concert Band performance

    4:45 - Symphonic Band performance

    5:30 - Awards

    5:45 - Depart for Walker

    6:15 - Arrive at Walker


    We wish the students all the best today as they compete.

    We need to plan for our end of the year events and look toward election of officers for next year.  Chaperons for Sandy Lake are needed as well as planning for the end of the year party!

    STAAR testing is taking place this week so there will be no before or after school practice.

    Students will have regular class schedule on Monday and Friday


    • Monday - regular class schedule - no before or after school practices
    • Tuesday - STAAR Testing - no before or after school practices
    • Wednesday - STAAR Testing - no before or after school practices
    • Thursday - STAAR Testing - no before or after school practices

    Sandy Lake Music Festival next Monday and Tuesday April 29 and 30!



    Requirements for participation


    Students planning on being part of the contest group and traveling to Sandy Lake need to have done the following:

    • Have passed all their classes on their last report card or progress report
    • Be making an A, 90% or higher, in Band 
    • Have attended enough before/after school practices (at least 12 this past 6 weeks)
    In addition this week we have asked all students to do the following:
    • Practice every evening at home...  try to get in 10 repetitions per night
    • Maintain your instrument - valve oil, reeds, etc
    • Return your permission slipped signed by Monday

    Schedule and Dress


    Students will wear their band t-shirt and khaki pants or shorts to Sandy Lake.  Students not in this uniform will not be allowed to go.  

    Students that are selected to perform with the band at Sandy Lake will follow this schedule next week.  Beginners on Monday April 29 and Advanced on Tuesday April 30

    • 3 before school rehearsals  8:00 - 8:40    Monday and Tuesday and Wednesday
    • 2 after school rehearsals  3:45 - 4:45   Monday and Tuesday
    • 2 in class rehearsals  Thursday, Monday and Tuesday

    Students planning on being part of the contest group and traveling to contest need to do the following:

    • Attend as many of these rehearsal as possible

    Schedule and Dress

    Students will wear dress black.  Any combination of black and grey dress clothes.  Modesty is a must.  Skirts must be knee length or longer.  Boys should wear dress slacks, shoes and shirt.  Coat and tie are optional.  Blue accents are acceptable.

    Students that are selected to perform with the Symphonic Band at UIL will follow this schedule on Wednesday.

    • 3 in class rehearsals  Thursday, Monday and Tuesday
    Students planning on being part of the contest group and traveling to contest need to do the following:

    UIL is just around the corner!


    April 10 is UIL Regional C & SR!

    Selected students will travel to Cedar Hill High School for UIL Concert & Sight Reading.  In order to be ready for this performance there will be rehearsal every day this week before school and after school on Tuesday and Thursday for Symphonic Band students.  In order to qualify for this performance students must:
    • demonstrate that they can play their part for Moscow 1941 this week in class
    • attend as many rehearsals before and after school as possible
    • have passed all classes on their most recent report card or on the progress report that will come out  this Friday

    • Attend Extra rehearsals          - Each student should attend 3 or more before or after school rehearsals per week

    DISD Concert and Sight Reading Evaluations!

    This Tuesday March 26 many of our 7th and 8th grade students will travel to Greiner Middle School for the Dallas ISD Concert and sight Reading Evaluations.  This year we will have two groups performing.  It is an honor to be selected for these groups.  Students that will perform have maintained the highest level of performance musically and academically.


    What to wear:  

    Dress black with blue accents - which is any combination of black and grey dress clothes.  Girls skirts must be knee length or longer - no exceptions!  Boys wear dress shoes, pants and shirt.  Ties and jackets are welcome as well

    What to bring

    Permission slip, Dress clothes, Instrument, music, valve oil, extra reeds, money for lunch at CiCi's pizza.

    Concert Thursday!


    Concert this Thursday for Music in our Schools Month!

    We will celebrate Music in our Schools Month with a Homecoming/Reunion concert with WT White High School.  Their band will join us at Walker for a concert at 6:30 PM the evening of March 7.   We have 4 rehearsals until this performance.

    What to wear...


    Beginner Band students should wear khaki pants and their band t-shirt the night of the concert.  Intermediate/Advanced students should wear dress black, which is any combination of black & grey.  Blue accents are optional.  Boys should wear Black or grey dress pants, shirt and shoes.  A blue tie is optional.  Girls should wear a black and/or grey dress (skirts MUST be knee length or longer) or dress pants outfit.  Blue accents like a scarf or  jewelry are allowed..

    Friday is the end of the six week grading period..

    Eligibility for field trips to UIL contest and Sandy Lake Music Festival will be determined by the grades on the next report card.  Students should be checking with all their teachers this week to make sure they have completed all the work for all classes.

    We need to have several parents step up to be on the band booster board for next year.  Most of our board members are parents of 8th graders and will be moving on to High School next year.  Come join us and see if you are interested in being a board member.  The time commitment is small but the impact on our program is HUGE!  Come invest in our students!  See you there!
